Books suitable for children of all ages and genres.
"My Opinion Of Children and Reading. Today's Challenges and How To Defeat Them."
Children can find reading (especially out loud in class) rather scaring or intimidating. Some may even, only like to read in private, at home, embarrassed by what they read or just because they do enjoy it. Then their is the 21st Century crowd, who are more interested in watching TV or playing on computer games than they are with picking up a book.
Children need to know that reading isn't a taboo. Reading isn't just something that you HAVE TO JUST DO for school any more. It truly can be done as a hobby, for enjoyment and as an alternative to continuously being on a game console or computer.
The amazing world of story-telling is a great way for children (and adults) to let their imaginations take them to new places.
Children's books aren't just for children any more, they can be enjoyed by everyone no matter what your age.
Like those of us who have read and enjoyed the Harry Potter series, even in adulthood I truly believe this can be said for almost 'all' children's books out there today.
Like most children out there I was slightly 'reluctant' to read loads when I was very young, but by the time I was close to going to high school, I became a 'bookworm 4 life'.
As a lover of books and a previous Library Assistant, I feel that it is and always should be, for children no matter what their ages are; should be encouraged to get into reading, From helping out with reading a shopping list, doing research for homework, joining in on reading challenges at a local library or even getting them to read a 'Argos' book on their favourite toys. All reading counts!
"BUT WHAT CAN BE DONE TO GET MORE CHILDREN READING?"
Encouragement is so easy to do. Encourage your children, your nieces and nephews, or your brothers or sisters. Find out what they like and find it in a book. Visit your local library or even your council website to find out what is on in your local area for children (Summer reading challenges or activity/reading days, can be found on the county council website for your local area, then going to libraries and then events page). Children can join the library FREE! that's right, FREE and they can check out up to 20 books for up to 4 weeks. (this includes fiction and non-fiction from the children's area). It's well worth checking out and asking what your local library has available for you.
Another great way to get kids reading is be rewarding them for a good deed or great report. It doesn't have to be expensive check out local bookstores, supermarkets or even charity shops to find the right type of book suitable for the reader you have in mind. (Personal experience, my nephew (6 at the time) is a HUGE reader and is obsessed by 'Horrid Henry' by Francesca Simon, with a good report or for helping out with chores and a little visit to 'pound-world' I could pick up a few books suitable for him for (you guessed it) £1 each). Why not spoil them with books instead of a ton of chocolate at Easter or Christmas? - Of course, its still always good to get SOME chocolate though ;-)
Finally, don't forget 'World Book Day'. Children still get tokens for books for them to use to get a free book or to use to put money towards a book that they want. It promotes reading as well as a great thing for kids to do (and oh yeah, World Book Day!)
So, I have rattled on enough about promoting books to kids, question is what do you do to get them to read? Fine let them play on their Xbox or Play Station, but encourage them to read (even if it is to you) for about 10 minutes a day. It all makes a difference. Sooner or later they'll want to read for longer because they (as well as you) want to know what is going to happen next. But this can't be possible without the exceptional writing and artwork of some of the best authors out there!
So with out further ado, here is a list of Children's books, I am not ashamed to say I have read and thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend them to you as well as children to read. Check them out NOW!

Crow's Revenge -
Keeper of the Realms(Book 1) By Marcus Alexander.
Head over to Intro for my Scale Ratings.
Summary
'Crow's Revenge' is Book One in the fantastic Keeper of the Realms series by Marcus Alexander. (The KOTR series is for the 8-12 age group and even though it orbits around Charlie's adventures there's enough in there to (hopefully!) get boys as well as girls away from the Xbox and back to reading.)
Charlie is a young girl who has had to deal with a lot. She has had to grow up well before her time.
Living in a large house that is not well tend for on the outside, which irritates the neighbours; Charlie is living with her grandmother who suffers from memory loss (a form of dementia in a way). She loves her home and her grandmother, but ever since her parents went missing, Charlie has had to deal with Mr Crow who is the family solicitor. As Charlie is too young to deal with the family estate, Mr Crow comes by regularly to pay bills and take money out (which Charlie is sure, hit Mr Crow is spending money on other things and not on what it is intended for)
Without giving to much away, Charlie ends in a new world called Bellania, all to escape a Giant called Bane and his Shades (and of course, Mr Crow). While in Bellania, Charlie comes across a Treman called Jensen (they have met once before inside Charlie's home - Charlie was exploring like she normally does to get away from Mr Crow and she came across new areas and rooms which is how she met Jensen and was informed about Bellania) and his men.
Charlie explains what has happened so far and is desperate to find her parents. Jensen takes her on a journey to see the Jade Circle to find out more about her parents, where they are and what there job was.
So this is where I am leaving my little summary, as I do not want to give away too much. All I'll say is if you like the summary, the blurb and my thoughts and rating, then check out Crows Revenge NOW!
It is truly beautifully written, it is creative, fun and full of adventure.
The Blurb
'I've just had a flesh-eating giant tearing around my house and now I'm in this strange land I don't know anything about!'
CHARLIE KEEPER has been forced from her home by a bloodthirsty and terrifying stranger.
But in escaping she discovers her house holds the gateway to the REALM OF BELLANIA - a place of myth, magic . . . and an evil Lord with a very bad attitude.
NOW its fate rests squarely upon Charlie's shoulders. But before she can untangle the mystery that will save Bellania, she needs the answer to a life-changing secret her guardian, the dastardly Mr Crow, has been keeping from her . . . Just who is Charlie Keeper?
- A contemporary fantasy adventure for 8+ with elements of The Wizard of Oz and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
My Thoughts
What can I say about 'Crow's Revenge' - Will I really was reluctant to write this review, BUT not for the reason you may think.
I hated to have to admit to myself that the adventure and book was over.
What a fantastic read, can't believe that it is aimed 'mainly' for children. Wow, it truly was an adventure of a life time for Charlie (the character) and Alexander's (Marcus the author) readers.
It is 'Harry Potter' meets 'Wizard of Oz' meets 'The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe' meets 'Inkheart' all rolled into One Book.
Every page was jam packed fill of adventure and fun. The story was easy to follow with short and extremely difficult to put down.
I know it is aimed for those aged 8+, but like Harry Potter and in my case Inkheart they truly can be enjoyed by avid readers of any age.
I can't wait for my nephew to get a little older so I can get him this series. Now I just have to wait for Markus to write some more.

Well what could I rate this book other than 5?
Great book that can be enjoyed by adults, children and those who are truly young at heart.
Just perfect. With short chapters and sentences it can be a great way to get children into reading.
P.S. The pictures are absolutely amazingly drawn.

The Emperor's New Clothes -
By Hans Christian Andersen.
Summary
The Emperor's New Clothes is a short tale written by Hans Christian Andersen.
This children's fairytale is about a vain emperor who loves nothing more than wearing the very finest clothes.
The emperor soon decides that he wants new clothes, so he employs two weavers who promise to create a new suit of clothes that are only visible to those who are intelligent and invisible to those who are stupid or incompetent. Well, the emperor thinks that this is a great idea, as he will be able to tell who in his court is of a high standard.
What the emperor doesn't realise is the weavers he hired are in fact swindlers. The request lots of gold thread, but instead of making the clothes using it, they bag of the thread for their personal use.
While the weavers are 'making' the emperor's suit of clothes (using invisible fabric), the emperor decides to send his minister and another officer of the court to insect the clothes and to report back to him. First the faithful old minister goes to see what it is the weavers are making. When he arrives, he sees them hard at work, but he cannot see anything! He keeps this to himself as it was said, "those who do not see the clothes are stupid". When the weavers ask the minister what he thinks, he says how wonderful they are (knowing if he was to tell the truth, he could appear unfit for the position as minister). The old minister reports back to the emperor how great the fabric looks and the emperor is pleased with the progress.
After a little longer, the emperor sends another trusted member of the court to see how the weavers are doing and whether they are close to finishing. Again, the member of court sees the weavers working very hard on the looms but is unable to see the clothing. Again, the weavers ask what he thinks and without wanting to reveal the truth, he says how nice they look.
Once the fabric is ready, the weavers ask the emperor to attend a fitting. They ask him to strip and the weavers mime dressing him. Once they have 'dressed' him, they say how amazing he looks in his new clothes and his ministers and members of court join in.
Everyone in the general public has heard of these amazing clothes and could not wait to see them. Now finally ready, the emperor decides to parade them around for his subjects to see. All the townsfolk cheer and clap to play along with the pretence (even though they do not see the emperors new clothes, they pretend they do as they do not want to come across as stupid).
While out parading for his townsfolk, a child in the crowd points and cries out "But he isn't wearing anything at all!" (The child being too young to understand the desirability of carrying on with the pretence). This creates an eruption throughout the townspeople, who then start to laugh and agreeing with the child. The emperor cringes and now realising that he didn't 'see' the clothes because they 'weren't there' to begin with, not wanting to show that he knows the child to be true, the emperor continues walking through the town.
This classic tale has been translated into over a hundred languages and has been enjoyed by millions of children over many years. It truly is a classic that is bound to be enjoyed for ever more as a great children's fairy tale.

Excerpt.
"Many years ago, there was an Emperor, who was so excessively fond of new clothes, that he spent all his money in dress. He did not trouble himself in the least about his soldiers; nor did he care to go either to the theatre or the chase, except for the opportunities then afforded him for displaying his new clothes. He had a different suit for each hour of the day; and as of any other king or emperor, one is accustomed to say, "he is sitting in council," it was always said of him, "The Emperor is sitting in his wardrobe."
Time passed merrily in the large town which was his capital; strangers arrived every day at the court. One day, two rogues, calling themselves weavers, made their appearance. They gave out that they knew how to weave stuffs of the most beautiful colors and elaborate patterns, the clothes manufactured from which should have the wonderful property of remaining invisible to everyone who was unfit for the office he held, or who was extraordinarily simple in character.
"These must, indeed, be splendid clothes!" thought the Emperor. "Had I such a suit, I might at once find out what men in my realms are unfit for their office, and also be able to distinguish the wise from the foolish! This stuff must be woven for me immediately." And he caused large sums of money to be given to both the weavers in order that they might begin their work directly."
My Thoughts
I am reviewing this book due to having just read it recently with my nephew. He had never heard of or read this story before and as we had him staying over with us over the weekend, he wanted a story before going to sleep.
The cover picture I chose above is the book that we read together. (Originally my Partner Paul's book) I thought it would be great to share with our nephew, Jake.
With a story that I can remember reading when I was young, it was definately a must for Jake. He ended up reading it all to me. He thoroughly enjoyed the story and the found the pictures amusing.
For getting the next generation into reading, this was a great story to chose. It was short enough for him to read before going to sleep and the wording, the font and font size was easy enough for him to follow and read without any issue. The pictures are beautifully done and break up the story perfectly, which kept him interested in what was happening as he was able to follow along with the pictures as well as the words.
As a quick read for children or for those who may just be starting out, 'The Emperor's New Clothes' by Hans Christian Andersen is a great story to get children into fairy tales.

Whether you're already a fan of Beast Quest and/or Sea Quest or new to the books, you'll love this exciting adventure story!
My Thoughts
These were great stories. I read them on the plane coming home and I truly enjoyed them. Couldn't help but think these would be great for my nephew.
The adventures where fun. Book easy to read and even had drawings to keep the reader interested.
Granted they were more like taster, rather than an actual full-length book, but the adventures that each character experienced was still exciting and for anyone looking to get more children into reading or to get them feeling comfortable reading out loud, then this is the exact size for those purposes.
Would love to see a full length book free sometime, but great also to see if its a series a child would enjoy, wants a story read to them before bedtime, to encourage reading and to be enjoyed by children and those 'big kids' that are young at heart (like myself).
I would definitely recommend this book to any parent struggling to get their child interested in reading.
