Wolf Winter - By Cecilia Ekback.
Blurb
'Like a silent fall of snow; suddenly, the reader is enveloped... visually acute, skilfully written; it won't easily erase its tracks in the reader's mind.' - HILARY MANTEL, author of Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies.
A brilliantly written and gripping historical Nordic Noir thriller with all the intrigue and atmosphere of Burial Rites, the pent-up passion of The Piano and the suspense of The Tenderness of Wolves.
There are six homesteads on Blackåsen Mountain.
A day's journey away lies the empty town. It comes to life just once, in winter, when the Church summons her people through the snows. Then, even the oldest enemies will gather.
But now it is summer, and new settlers are come.
It is their two young daughters who find the dead man, not half an hour's walk from their cottage.
The father is away. And whether stubborn, or stupid, or scared for her girls, the mother will not let it rest.
To the wife who is not concerned when her husband does not come home for three days; to the man who laughs when he hears his brother is dead; to the priest who doesn't care; she asks and asks her questions, digging at the secrets of the mountain.
They say a wolf made those wounds. But what wild animal cuts a body so clean?
My Thoughts
Wolf Winter is set in the 18th Century Swedish wilderness, where witchcraft is still placing women under suspicion.
You meet Maija and her family (husband and two daughters), whom have all recently moved to Blackasen Mountain. Their eldest daughter, Frederika finds a body and while the rest of the town think it was the work of bears or wolves, Maija has other ideas. Maija thinks it may have something to do with a human rather than an animal due to the precision of the wounds on the body. This leads Maija to want to dive deep and start her own investigation in to this ‘incident’.
Maija is searching for the truth, which sets the town rushing to ensure long hidden secrets stay that way. Frederika sees the determination in her mother to find out what truly happened, which lead her to go on her own adventure. Frederika is drawn to the mountain and the mystical side for her own heritage.
This story shows to points of view. From Maija the mother and her determination to find out the truth about a death that others say was the work of an animal. The other is from Majia’s eldest daughter, Frederika who sees her mother’s determination to find the truth and embarks on finding out about her mystical heritage.
This book was well written, the way the author was able to bring to life the story in my minds-eye due to the description alone was fantastic.
This book is hard to place genre-wise as it was intriguing, atmospheric, thrilling, gripping as well as being rather creepy and ghost-like.
If you are into the new ‘Nordic’ wave of books/TV shows currently out right now, then this is the perfect read for you, or if you are just into a great crime/thriller/suspense or classic ‘who done it?’, then this is a one for you to try.

My Rating
I would give this book a good 4 out of 5. Truly was full of suspense. Wolf Winter is gripping from the
get go. If you like a story about survival, struggles and a determination to find out the truth, then I
would say go for it.
It really reminds me of old-school murder mysteries from authors such as Agatha Christie, or from
modern day authors such as Stieg Larsson or Karin Slaughter.

'Name: Stella Sweeney.
Height: average.
Recent life events: dramatic.'
One day, sitting in traffic, married Dublin mum Stella Sweeney attempts a good deed. The resulting car crash changes her life.
For she meets a man who wants her telephone number (for the insurance, it turns out). That's okay. She doesn't really like him much anyway (his Range Rover totally banjaxed her car).
But in this meeting is born the seed of something which will take Stella thousands of miles from her old life, turning an ordinary woman into a superstar, and, along the way, wrenching her whole family apart.
Is this all because of one ill-advised act of goodwill? Was meeting Mr Range Rover destiny or karma? Should she be grateful or hopping mad?
For the first time real, honest-to-goodness happiness is just within her reach. But is Stella Sweeney, Dublin housewife, ready to grasp it?

My Review - 'The Woman Who Stole My Life' by Marian Keyes
#Blogger's Note: Above you will be able to see 'the blurb' and unfortunately due to legal requirements I am unable to do an extract from the book, there for please read below for a summary of the book in my words followed by my rating and view.
Please note this was reviewed for LovereadingUK and can be viewed on their website as well as other reviewers comments.
Summary in my words
Stella Sweeney is a woman who has just turned 40! Her two teenage kids are living their own lives (Son is obsessed with cooking and yoga, while her daughter feels she has found the 'love of her life') and her husband is constantly working (an artist turned interior bathroom designer, who strives to be a 'real' artist).
She is a true believer of karma and feels that by doing good deeds means karma will be good in return. That is until she decides to let a car out in front and it courses a car pile up.
Then illness strikes. Taking a very long time to recover from this and not realising that what she has been saying and going through has been recorded by another and these are what help her to get her life back once she is fully recovered.
Leading her to write a self-help book, Stella is whisked in to a whirlwind of book signings and TV interviews, Stella ends up in America and moves into a duplex in New York.
After a year, she ends up back in Dublin with her son. Where did it all go wrong? How did she end up in Now York? Why is she struggling to write another book?
This story jumps and skips between two years of Stella's life, from her working at her sisters salon, to her illness and recovery, to her book tour and of course changes in her relationships, life, and more.
My Thoughts
This is the first book that I have read of Marian Keyes, so decided to do a little digging.
Before reading, I googled who writes like Marian Keyes and from the information I got, I thought that this story would be on par with some of the other authors which I have enjoyed in the past (such as Cathy Kelly, Jane Green and Adele Parks).
‘The Woman That Stole My Life’ did start with promise, but then unfortunately it took a nose drive.
The characters where much of the same. They started off interesting and ‘quirky’ such as the yoga loving son who enjoyed making Stella’s life a little difficult (like most teenagers do) and the husband who is an artist, who feels like Stella got the fame, the fortune and the lifestyle that he deserved. As the story went on, I ended up finding the characters rather annoying.
As I was unhappy with this book as a whole, I only rate it a 3. Some people out there may enjoy it, but I personally did not. However, this has not put me off trying another book written by the author Marian Keyes.
Fans of Keyes may like this book.

Summary in my words
‘It Started With Paris’ is a Fantastic, sophisticated story about various people whom are brought together by a wedding.
Leila is the best friend of Katy (the woman who just got engaged in Paris). She was married to the man of her dreams, or so she thought. That is until he ups and leaves her. Now she is trying to plod through life on her own and although work as a promoter of movies keeps her busy, she still is devastated that now she is alone. She then has to try and deal with being there for her best friend who is happily in love and about to get married, when a family accident calls her home to her mother. She feels out of her depth and it is made worse now she has no one to confide in anymore.
Vonnie has a son and after losing her husband to a terrible accident, moved to Ireland to start again, where she opens up a cake store. Years later she meets Lee and all though they want to move on with their life, there is someone from Lee’s life who is determined to stop them in their tracks.
And then there’s Grace. Grace is a divorced head teacher and the mother of the groom. Now that her son is getting married she needs to involve her ex-husband (who now has a new partner). This means they are going to spend more time together, although they get on great now, things weren't always that way, but now they start to wonder if they made a mistake all those years ago. Should they get back together? Or should they leave things alone?
My Views
‘It Started With Paris’ is a beautifully written tale of how lives intertwine when a wedding is involved.
From family, to friends, to cake bakers, follow their lives as they try and deal with their own lives as well as dealing with the upcoming nuptials.
I truly found this story to be 'un-putdownable'. As always Cathy Kelly has managed to capture me as a reader from the onset. The characters were so lovable (well most of them anyway.), I found it fascinating how well she was able to keep each main character's stories separate, yet then have the ability to bring them together.
My personal recommendation is to switch off your phones, lock your door, grab a nice glass of wine or hot drink and a bar of chocolate. One you start you won't want to put it down.

The Blurb
On the morning she will never forget, suburban teenager Cynthia Archer awakes with a nasty hangover and a feeling she is going to have an even nastier confrontation with her mom and dad. But when she leaves her bedroom, she discovers the house is empty, with no sign of her parents or younger brother Todd. In the blink of an eye, without any explanation, her family has simply disappeared.
Twenty-five years later Cynthia is still haunted by unanswered questions. Were her family murdered? If so, why was she spared? And if they're alive, why did they abandon her in such a cruel way?
Now married with a daughter of her own, Cynthia fears that her new family will be taken from her just as her first one was. And so she agrees to take part in a TV documentary revisiting the case, in the hope that somebody somewhere will remember something - or even that her father, mother or brother might finally reach out to her...
Then a letter arrives which makes no sense and yet chills Cynthia to the core. And soon she begins to realise that stirring up the past could be the worst mistake she has ever made...

MY THOUGHTS
I am unsure how to take this book. Although the book is expertly written and the characters were decent and fairly likable, I found the way the small girl came across as being very intellectual not very believable for being an eight year old.
I did find that I just had to continue reading until I found out what actually happened and felt it was a roller-coaster ride that kept guessing until the end.
The reason I feel slightly let down is due to some inconsistencies that didn't really go anywhere. (How can a family member be dying one minute then fine the next?). These inconsistencies did make me say “Huh, What??” throughout the book and although the ending turned out to be sad (a grab the tissues moment), I still can’t bring myself to come ‘off the fence’ with this one.
On the plus side, I did feel like I was ‘watching’ the plot-line unfold (similar to a reality TV show), which I found to be an interesting way to portrait a story.
As an author Linwood Barclay is an amazing and following other books I have read of his, I was slightly let down, expecting one thing but getting something else.
My Rating
I would rate ‘No Time For Goodbye’ 3.5 out of 5. I believe the story had great potential and is still a traditional crime/thriller novel. I think if I hadn't read the reviews found in newspapers and just picked it up, I would have enjoyed it better.
